Intensive Still Life Oil Painting Course - Mediterranean Inspired Astoria Art Center Instructor- Muna Alfadel 5 sessions over the course of two weeks Cost: $400 per person 3 hours per session This still life oil painting intensive course will introduce beginner paintings and those with no oil painting experience to the craft through a Mediterranean inspired still life filled with objects pulled from Astoria’s shared Greek and Arabic heritage. In this course, students will learn how to properly use and maintain oil painting materials, color theory, compositional theories, how to stretch a canvas, alla prima painting techniques, grissaile techniques, and glazing techniques. Students will learn how to “see” in a new way, develop a new skill for life, and leave the class with a brand new piece of artwork for their home! Light snacks and beverages will be available in the classes :) Class Schedule: Week 1: October 13 & 14th 1: Intro to the class, class schedule and goals of the course. Materials overhaul Critic intro First exercise: Quick sketch/learning how to see as a painter Starts with a 10-15 lecture on “seeing” as an artist (objects in relation to each other) and then we do maybe 10 minutes of quick times charcoal sketching and them get into the rest of the class of doing it with oil paint 2: Understanding Composition, Color, and Light and in relation to each other and Alla Prima painting technique Canvas stretching Start with a quick 20 minute composition theory lecture… give some examples of still life compositions. Then a very basic color theory lecture (complimentary, analogous colors) both for mixing color and for setting up composition. Talking about light within painting and how light works 3 different times still live- so maybe each will be for about 35-40 minutes in this class. Students will move their set ups with each one. The group will arrange the objects themselves to practice the skills we just spoke about at the beginning of the class There are quick alla prima paintings in order to loosen up fully and just get used to seeing and from all angles Quick critic Optional “Homework”: Sketching objects from life in notebook. Watching videos about composition building and still life painting over the weekend. Week 2: October 20 & 21 3: Long term painting begins Class will build the still life composition they will be painting together. Fat over lean and Underpainting/Grisaille lecture Sustained painting begins Finish the clas
